Key Concepts- Media Language- Mae, Imo, Candice and Charlotte


Media Language
Media language refers to the 'tools' used by any text to communicate meaning.

Candice: Media language covers all area's of film production such as...
Charlotte: Editing, this consists of cross-cutting, parallel editing, pace, transitions and continuity.
Mae: Mis en Scene, this consists of costume, lighting, hair, make-up, colour, props, setting, facial expression, body language and composition.
Imo: Camera work, this consists of shot distance, movement, angles, framing, depth of field and focus pull.
Candice: Sound, this consists of contrapuntal, parallel, diegetic, non-diegetic, dialogue, off-screen, on-screen, narration and foley.
Charlotte: These are the techniques used when making a film to convey a certain message to the audience.
Mae: Different genres use these techniques in different ways
Imo: For example, a horror will use high pitch non-diegetic sound and low key lighting to build tension and to create an edgy atmosphere.
Candice: Compared to a comedy that would use brighter lighting and happy non-diegetic sound to create humour and a light-hearted atmosphere.
